How does PFAS impact seniors?
In Benzie County, 24% of residents are over 65 years old. There are contamination sites in nearby counties in the area that negatively affect the health of residents, especially the senior population.
Studies show that some common health impacts associated with PFAS exposure include liver damage, thyroid disease, high cholesterol, obesity, testicular and kidney cancer. The elderly are especially vulnerable to these conditions, which can be exacerbated with age and health.
The effects of PFAS could be devastating, and in order to better protect our aging population from the harmful health effects of PFAS, we must work to eliminate PFAS contamination. Seniors should take caution with regards to potential PFAS contamination, and make sure to check regularly that they are not consuming water from contaminated areas.
